Racialized people who bear the burden of witnessing, experiencing, and speaking about their individual experiences with racism and white supremacy are exhausted. While avenues to address and learn about racism are becoming more abundant, an often overlooked aspect of an equitable and anti-racist future is the ability for racialized people to access spaces of healing.

The Language Access Project (LAP) will address the growing need for cultural competency and language accessibility from all levels of government and public institutions, by sharing knowledge and creating space to build long-term relationships between community experts and institutional staff. 

The Asian Community Convener Project focuses on establishing a baseline understanding of where and how anti-racism work is being advanced by Asian community organizations in the province of British Columbia.

In the summer of 2021, best friends and co-facilitators Rachel Cheang and Em Jun Ng-Mittertreiner, with the support of hua foundation staff Kimberley Wong, brought to life a program called Loss in Translation: A Summer Workshop Series for Asian Youth.

In March 2020, due to increasing concerns around the potential for community transmission of COVID-19 and rapid changing food access in the neighbourhood (grocery stores and restaurants closing or operating with limited hours due to the pandemic), the Chinatown Cares project was developed as an emergency response program to ensure access to affordable, fresh, culturally appropriate groceries for isolated Chinese-speaking seniors. 

Choi means “vegetables” in Cantonese, but it means so much more to us. The Choi Project was a signature project of hua foundation from 2013 to 2018, and now continues through ongoing programming like our community supported agriculture program, resource guides, and occasional cooking workshops.

Shark Truth was founded in 2009 by hua foundation’s co-founder Claudia Li. It was a program dedicated to promoting awareness, education, and action for shark conservation with a specific focus on the cross-cultural aspect of shark conservation. It aimed to shift the conversation happening around shark fin soup, a culturally significant soup served at weddings and special celebrations in Chinese culture.
