Supporting Indigenous-led organizations by giving One Day’s Pay

On Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th, 2021, One Day’s Pay launched a grassroots campaign to mobilize settlers and non-Indigenous people in Canada to meaningfully recognize the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, and to honour their survivors, their families and communities.

One Day’s Pay is guided by The Circle on Philanthropy, a national Indigenous led organization that works to transform the philanthropic sector to redistribute wealth, activate wisdom and strengthen organizational infrastructure for the purpose of Indigenous peoples, organizations, communities and nations.

The Circle encourages giving abundantly, directly, and without restrictions, and that includes giving without the need for a charitable tax receipt. Many Indigenous-led organizations, projects, movements, or nations don’t have charitable status because they’re not eligible or because they don’t want their work constrained by the Canada Revenue Agency. Indigenous-led initiatives are often born out of land and water defence and charitable status could impede that integral work. Navigating the CRA requirements can also be time consuming and cumbersome, and we advocate for donors to give generously, with or without the tax deduction.

Let’s bring the conversation home. #OneDaysPay. 一天的薪酬. Isang Araw na Suweldo.

Every year, we give One Day’s Pay to an Indigenous-led organization on behalf of each staff member. As a part of this action, each person is tasked with choosing one Indigenous-led organization to support—adding a layer of personal connection, reflection, and research. And though this is only one tangible action towards reconciliation, we call upon other settler organizations and individuals to show their support in this way too, if they are able.

We’re encouraging everyone to engage in meaningful actions, whether through a donation or by participating in activities that deepen our understanding and support for Indigenous communities.
