Our Name Hua refers to three phrases in Mandarin: ‘change’ 變化 [M: bian hua C: been faa], ‘people of ethnic Chinese descent’ 華人 [M: hua ren C: waa yun], and ‘culture’ 文化 [M: wen hua C: man faa].
A message from our co-founders: When we started working on shark fin issues in 2009, we were fresh out of university. We never expected how much the movement would grow. We also never anticipated how much we would learn in the process.
Unbeknownst to us, we were riding a big wave into the intersection where environmental issues and cultural tradition met and sometimes clashed. While it was the science that first compelled us to make change, along the way, we realized that the things that drive us to protect the planet are the values our family and elders instilled in us.
Both our families came to Canada to give us a better quality of life — a place where we could have clean air, clean water, access to food that made us feel at home, in a place of opportunity. They worked hard and sacrificed much so we could have a better quality of life than they did. This is not a story that is unique to us but a story of many youth.
In our work, we are carrying our lineage from our elders, to create a place where we can celebrate our cultural heritage on a planet that will thrive to sustain us for many generations into the future. We imagine a world where we can walk down the street, know our grocers and get the sense of home our grandparents had from 20 years ago, but this time around, we’ll know how those ingredients came to be, what is in them, and its impacts on our health and the planet.
This only the tip of the iceberg. We couldn’t be more excited for what can come and we invite you to join us.
